Play Through The Bible - Week 20 - Parable of the Sower

Week 20 of Play Through The Bible is the parable of the sower. This was a really fun week for us! We had a lot of good conversations and did some really fun activities.

If you haven’t read the introduction to this series yet I recommend going here. For all the plans in one place, go here.

Week Twenty – The Parable of the Sower

Focus Point

The seeds grow in the good dirt. (I want to have a good heart where God’s Word can grow in me)

Story Time Tips

  • We read “The Farmer” starting on page 190 of The Rhyme Bible Storybook for Toddlers.
  • This parable came at the perfect time because recently K has been learning about what plants need to grow. We were able to go through the pictures and talk about how the seeds couldn’t grow when the birds took them away from the dirt, or in the hot sun with no rain, etc.
  • The biggest part about this story was trying to make the connection between the good soil and the seeds and having a good heart where God’s Word can grow. It really helped to read the story each day and go over it. Each day he seemed to understand it more and more. We talked about it during each activity we did as well, and that really seemed to help too.
  • We’d never really referred to the Bible as God’s Word before, so we talked about that too. I told him God’s Word was what He tells us in the Bible. We would also talk about some examples of what God’s Word tells us. A favorite lately has been “Children obey your parents.” 🙂

Activity

Lay out a blanket (the soil) and throw some pillows (the rocks) onto it. Place a laundry basket nearby. Have a race to collect the stones and clear the field to make “good soil.”

Discussion

Parent: “Where do the seeds grow?”

Child: “In the good soil.”

Parent: “Do you have a good heart like the good soil?”

Child: “Yes!”

Parent: “What can grow in your heart?”

Child: “God’s word.”

Parent: “Yes, so you can grow to do good things.”

Materials needed:

  • Seeds
  • Place to plant seeds (we used a pre-assembled kit, but you can use any type of container and some potting soil)

This parable was perfectly timed for this week since we were already planning on starting some seeds for our little garden! We purchased a seed starting kit to make it easy, but a recycled container, a little bit of potting soil, and some grass seed will work just as great!

First we added some water to our container.

Then we planted our seeds.

Now we are waiting for our seeds to grow in their good soil!

Day Five – Seeds in the Good Soil Snack

Materials needed:

  • Pudding (you can use a pre-made pudding, an instant packet, or this really easy and quick recipe we used here)
  • Slivered almonds (or something else that resembles seeds, such as mini marshmallows, candies, peanuts, etc)
  • Shallow dish

We’ve never done a Bible themed snack, so I thought this would be a fun idea for this week.

After letting your pudding cool, put it into your shallow dish. If you don’t have a shallow dish, just use a regular one!

Place the “seeds” on top of your pudding “soil.”
